Theodore Cazer; Born 1905; in Brooklyn NY; Died, April 14, 1945 in Germany. Theodore Cazer, called Leo by his friends and family was born in Brooklyn in 1905 to Lewis and Ida Cazer. He had one older brother, Robert. His father, Lewis was a tugboat captain in the New York Harbor. At age 18 Leo started to work for the Lakawanna Railroad. He never married. Although exempt from service during World War II, because the operation of the railroads was considered critical to the war effort, Leo volunteered for duty in the Army. He thought single man like himself should serve in place of men with families. Leo was inducted into the service on February 3, 1941. He was assigned to the infantry and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He saw action in the Europe/African theater from August 1942 through February 1943. He then was assigned in the States until February 1945. In February his regiment was sent again to Europe and into the battles in Germany. In an attack against enemy German soldiers known as the Rhur pocket he was struck by a fragment from an exploding enemy shell. He died on April 14, 1945. He was interned in a national cemetery on Long Island on April 1, 1949. He was Survived by his father, Lewis, brother Robert and two nephews, Bobby and Donald. |
